Back pain is one of the most common complaints affecting nine out of ten Americans in their lifetime and five out of ten adults every year. Americans spend more than $50 billion each year on low back pain and it is the most common cause for job-related disability and leading contributor to missed work. Lower back pain affects areas of the back ranging from above the legs to just below the ribs, the core area that holds most of the body’s weight.
Common causes of back pain are from strain (such as lifting an item improperly), injury or overuse from doing uncommon or monotonous tasks and may last for a few days up to a few weeks. Back pain that is more severe and lasts longer than a few weeks, will need additional attention. Other factors contributing to back pain are aging, arthritis, osteoporosis, illness or birth defects.
Lower back pain can cause a variety of symptoms due to its location and may be acute, recurring, or chronic. Many people associate back pain with any type of pain in that region causing some type of pain, spasm or stiffness, and may also cause other symptoms in areas such as the legs.
There are 2 common treatments to back pain: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and surgery. The most common medical treatment is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen). This treatment method will temporarily alleviate symptoms, but often does not address the underlying cause of pain. Additionally the medical research showing us that chronic use of these can cause cancer, kidney or liver damage. The second medical option is surgery of which there are 916,000 spinal surgeries performed each year in the US most of which must be redone after five years.
The Maximized Living approach does not cover up the symptom but actually finds and treats the cause of the problem. Most often this includes a scan of your spine and nervous system using state of the art technology to check for diminished nerve supply. If nerve supply is diminished at all it must be restored so the body can heal at 100%. Other aspects include advanced workshops to teach you how to fuel your body and move your body back towards health during your recovery.
