The number one determining factor to our success or failure in life is not our circumstances, but our mindset. How many Rocky stories have you witnessed where someone battles their way out of a really bad situation – broken home, abuse, neglect, poverty – or a string of career crippling failures, or athletic losses, only to prevail, claim victory, and as Steve Jobs said it, “put a dent in the universe.”
Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team. Sylvester Stallone sold his dog for 25 dollars because he was homeless and broke. Oprah Winfrey grew up without her parents, was molested and ran away from home at 13. These superstars definitely weren’t fed with a silver spoon, and in fact had to overcome more difficult circumstances than most of us ever will. It wasn’t their circumstances that enabled them to be massively successful; it was their mindset and unrelenting belief in their potential and destiny.
I believe that the antagonist to being great is not bad circumstances, education, talent, or privilege. The number one thing standing in your way of massive success and greatness is being “OK”, good enough, and comfortable. I believe that the difference between the mediocre most and the remarkable few is that those who change the world and make their mark in history have an unshakable belief and confidence in their purpose, potential, and destiny, and will risk it all and sacrifice everything to make it happen. Often times it’s a bad situation or circumstance that forces them to take a stand, draw a hard line, and take full responsibility for their life and their outcome.
We don’t need to wait for something catastrophic or tragic to happen in our lives for us to make a decision to start walking in the greatness we were destined for. But it does require a realization that in order for your life to become something different – YOU have to become something different. Start with the belief that if they did it, you can too, break the limiting belief that you are a victim of your circumstances, and start taking action EVERY DAY that is consistent with they type of person you want to become. As Gandhi said “Change your thoughts and you’ll change your words. Change your words and you’ll change your behavior. Change your behavior and you’ll change your habits. Change your habits and you’ll change your values. Change your values and you’ll change your destiny.”
Don’t try to be something you’re not. But live to your fullest potential and pursue the greatness that you were created for, and you too will put a dent in the universe.
